Grandmother’s Drum Returns to the Stage - By Sashar Zarif
A Solo Dance of Memory, Rhythm, and Inheritance

Presented as part of The IBPOC Artists’ Network Tour
Presented by wind in the leaves collective, with participating presenters

Saturday, December 6, 2025
7:30 PM
(Doors open at 7:00 PM)
Aki Studio Theatre
Daniels Spectrum, 585 Dundas Street East, Toronto

Grandmother’s Drum brings Sashar Zarif back to the earliest pulse of his artistry — the moment a five-year-old child sat on a handwoven carpet and listened to the heartbeat of a frame drum in his grandmother’s hands. In this intimate solo dance performance, Zarif transforms that memory into movement, rhythm, and story.

With the Gaval as his companion, he traces the lines between ancestry and presence, between the sounding body and the moving body — offering an evening where tradition becomes lived memory and memory becomes dance.

This work is a tribute to heritage and resilience — and to the quiet, enduring power of the hands that first taught us how to listen with our whole being.

These weekly workshops will offer various ways of employing and engaging the spiritual, ritualistic and meditative aspects of movement.

The workshops are open to individuals with any physical background (all forms of dance, physical theatre, martial arts, yoga, etc.) who are interested in experiencing the sacredness of the body through movement phrases, chants and exercises that foster awareness and presence.

Facilitated by Sashar Zarif, these workshops are inspired by Sufi and Shamanic Dance and Music rituals of Central and Western Asia, Middle East and North Africa.
